Programming for Beginners

Middle-school students are invited to join a team of Baxter Academy girls who code to learn programming. Emphasis is on introducing coding to young people who are intrigued but maybe intimidated, too. Learners will complete an introductory programming course using the free module from CodeHS.com. This online module, Programming with Karel, consists of 15 lessons and is self-paced. Students are able to track their own progress through the module, while instructors are able to track progress and give feedback via the instructor dashboard. The module will introduce students to basic programming features including defining functions, using conditional statements, and loops. One Baxter Academy teacher has successfully used this module as a starting point for a course entitled Programming for Beginners.
