Learner follows a prompt or activity to complete the first part of the writing process: brainstorming and pre-writing. Generative work usually lasts about 20 minutes and students often complete several of these short generative assignments during a typical camp.

Learner has at least three entries in his or her notebook that could form the foundation of a longer piece of writing. Entries are usually about half a page long and focus more on getting thoughts down on the page than grammar and spelling. Learner submits notebook to instructor. Instructor looks for evidence of each generative assignment; content should be of the proper length and address the prompt or theme.
